On Monday, July 3, at 6:16 p.m., patrol officers responded to the 1600 block of Adriatic Avenue in reference to a man stabbed.
Officer Zayon Pitts arrived and observed the victim, 18, of Egg Harbor Township, bleeding from his neck.
Pitts rendered aid while awaiting medical personnel.
The victim was transported to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Division with non-life threatening, but serious injury.
An investigation by officers and members of the Criminal Investigations Section determined that the victim was standing with a friend when Tyler Smith approached.
Smith allegedly questioned why white people were allowed in the neighborhood before stabbing the victim, police said.
Several members of the community attempted to intervene and detain Smith, but he fled before arrival of police.
Surveillance Center personnel were able to obtain a photograph of Smith fleeing, police said.
He also dropped his wallet during the altercation with bystanders leading to his identification, police said.
Shortly after 9 p.m., Officer Latray Butcher, while inside the medical center, observed Smith. He was taken into custody without incident.
Smith, of Atlantic City, was charged with attempted murder, bias intimidation, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and certain person not to possess a weapon, police said.
Smith was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
